Cultivation
In the first years after plantation establishment, no or very little Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) can be harvested. Between the 6th and the 25th year the yields are the highest before a decline in productivity can be observed. Additionally, the palm oil trees become too high and aggravate the harvest. Thus the plantation is cleared and a new cultivation cycle started. The model considers a average yield of 20,7 t FFB/ha*a over a cultivation period of 25 years. This value includes yield reduction through one year nursery and two years of a non-productive phase at the beginning. The nursery phase itself is due to its very little impact on the overall result not considered. After two to three years the oil palms bear the first fruits. The fruit bunches are harvested by hand when ripe/mature using a long sickle or a chisel every 10 to 15 days. The Fresh Fruits Bunches are laid down at the side of the road so they can be picked up and transported with a lorry or a tractor to the palm oil mill for further processing.
Processing
The oil winning process involves the reception of FFBs from the plantations, sterilizing and threshing of the bunches to free the palm fruit, mashing the fruit and pressing out the crude palm oil. The crude oil is further treated and refined.
The Palm Kernels, which arise as a by-product in the Crude Palm Oil extraction, are further processed in a Palm Kernel Oil Mill. The kernels are cleaned and the Palm Kernel Oil is extracted from the kernels using a screw press. Then the oil is purified through a coarse screen filter and a filter press. The final-products are Crude Palm Kernel Oil and Palm Kernel Cake which can be used as animal feed. Other co-products are Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB). Currently most POME is treated in anaerobic ponds. Methane emissions, which have a higher GWP impact than CO2, are released from those open ponds. The assumption was made that in average of 5 % of the POME biogas is collected and incinerated. For the electricity generated a credit is given within this dataset. Besides methane, other open pond emissions were taken into account (N2O and NH3).
In the case of EFB mulching is the most used treatment option. 100% Mulching is assumed for this study. The EFBs are brought back to the field and used as organic fertilizer. This leads to a reduced mineral fertilizer demand.
Fibres and shells are generally burned and used for internal usage. The additional energy and fossil fuel demand for the palm oil mill are considered in the model. The excess heat is not given any credit as it is not practically used.
Allocation
To distribute the environmental burden between the Co-products economic allocation with prices from the Worldbank, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board and FAOSTAT was applied.
Background System
The background system is addressed as follows: Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly the individual power plants in service are modelled according to the current national grid. This includes net losses and imported electricity. Second, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled. Third, the country-specific fuel supply (share of resources used, by import and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents) are accounted for. Fourth, the import, transport, mining and exploration processes for the energy carrier supply chain are modelled according to the specific situation of each power-producing country. The different mining and exploration techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different exploration countries are accounted for according to current engineering knowledge and information. Steam: The steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to the technology efficiencies and energy carriers used. Efficiencies range from 84% to 94% in relation to the representative energy carrier (gas, oil, coal). Coal, crude oil and natural gas used for the generation of steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included. Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources are included. Furthermore all relevant and known pipeline and / or tanker transport of gases and oil imports are included. Energy carriers: Coal, crude oil, natural gas and uranium are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via a country-specific, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. Hence the refinery products used show the individual country-specific use of resources. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific crude oil situation with the respective properties of the resources.Oil palm fruit bunchesPalm Oil Mill (Palm Oil Production) [100% EFB (empty fruit bunches) mulching] (data set not included in documentation)Diesel mix at refineryProvision of a standard natural product according to the applied technology.Renewables_crude palm oil_process schemeLCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - market valueAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - massForeground system: Allocation by price was applied: the products palm crude oil and palm kernel are allocated by market value.
Background system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.

Background system: All data used in the calculation of the LCI results refer to net calorific value.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesThe cut-off criteria were set in accordance with the relevant ISO standard 14040 as follows:
Mass – If a flow is less than 2 % of the cumulative mass of all the inputs and outputs of the LCI model, it may be excluded, provided its environmental relevance is not of concern.
Energy – If a flow is less than 2 % of the cumulative energy of all the inputs and outputs of the LCI model, it may be excluded, provided its environmental relevance is not of concern.
Environmental relevance – If a flow meets the above criteria for exclusion, yet is thought to potentially have a significant environmental impact, it will be included. All material flows which leave the system (emissions) and whose environmental impacts are higher than 1 % of the entire impact of an impact category that has been considered in the assessment, has been covered.
The sum of the neglected material flows does not exceed 5 % of mass, energy or envi-ronmental relevance. Cut-off criteria have been applied on unit processes and not on calculated inventories.

It can be used to characterise the supply chain situation of the respective commodity in a representative manner. Combination with individual unit processes using this commodity enables the generation of user-specific (product) LCAs.
