LUC as fossil CO2) (wet mill) (economic allocation)soybean cultivation and wet mill with solvent extractionsingle producer, at plant36.6 MJ/ kg net calorific value, 77.8% carbon contentsoybean oilMaterials productionFood and renewable raw materialsThe data set is an estimation for soybean cake production under Brazil conditions.
Wet mill: Estimation is based on the data set for soybean cake production in Brazil using Brazilian energy conditions. The data set represents a cradle to gate inventory with a good overall data quality. The inventory is based on literature, and expert estimations1279The data set represents the country specific situation in Brazil, focusing on the main technologies, the region specific characteristics and / or import statistics.Impacts from agricultural and animal production depend upon local conditions in terms of climate, soil type, fertility, indigenous pests and also on available technology such as the degree of mechanisation, use of fertilizers, pesticides, the livestock breeding system etc. Given the large degree of variation in all these factors it is difficult to define a “general” production situation.
This inventory is based on secondary data. Emission data of CH4, N2O and NH3 were used from the IPCC. Data were compared and mean values were built. The soy production system was modelled using the GaBi Agricultural LCA model. Yield an fertilization data was retrieved from FAO Stat. Nitrogen content of the final product and in plant residues was calculated based on Salvagiotti et al 2008. Stover was assumed to be left on the field, the nutritional value was considered in calculation of the nitrogen balance. As soybean is a legume, which is able to fix atmospheric nitrogen because of its symbiotic relationship with rhizobioa bacteria, the amount of used N-fertilizer applied is very low compared to other crops. Pesticides should be applied according to infestation and economic thresholds. For modeling purposes an average pesticide application was assumed based on applications reported by Caires 2006.
Field emissions of NH3, NOx, N2, NO3-, CH4, and N2O gases from organic and mineral fertilizer degradation have been assessed based on Bouwmann, A. F. 1996, Brentrup, F. et. AL. 2000, IPCC 2003 and IPCC 2008.
The agricultural model within GaBi used for calculation assumes that nitrate is stored in the soil, so after accounting for uptake by crop and losses a defined fraction of the input is available in the following production period. Impacts associated with atmospheric deposition of different forms of nitrogen play an important role in eco systems and were included in this assessment.
Carbon dioxide uptake and conversion by the crop (removing CO2 from the atmosphere) is assessed in order to understand the carbon losses during post harvest processing. The carbon dioxide uptake is considered as a carbon dioxide input flow in the GaBi dataset.
Land Use Change
Based on the land use changes of forest and of plantations (FAO Stat), an area on which Land Use change occurred can be calculated. Taking into account a shift from other agricultural crops to soybean, a share of 56 % of the total area under cultivation since 1992 was assumed to be planted on natural forest. For this area the Emissions for Land Use Change are taken into account with 29,7 kg CO2 / ha*a (Literature value based on IPCC methodology; Flynn et al 2012). For the area which was already in 1992 under cultivation, no Land use change applied.
The soybeans are received at 12% moisture. Following testing and cleaning beans are cracked to remove the hull. Removed hulls and such bean meats that adhere to the hull in normal milling operations form the Soybean Mill Run (soybean hulls) A typical soybean hulls contains 11% crude protein, 35% crude fibre, and 13% moisture. The dehulled beans are rolled into full-fat flakes The rolling process disrupts the oil cells, facilitating solvent extraction of the oil. After the oil has been extracted, the solvent is removed, and the flakes are dried, creating defatted soy flakes. The defatted soy flakes are than processed into soybean meal for animal fodder. Defatted soy flakes can also be ground into soy flour, or sized to produce soy grits or texturized to produce textured vegetable protein for food uses. Further processing can produce high protein food ingredients such as soy protein concentrates and isolated soy protein.
This dataset is based on secondary data from literature and expert judgment. The following table shows the product outputs of the soybean wet milling process per 1 kg of soybean input

Background system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.
